Chuck Bateman a strong leader
The Herald Journal, Letters to the Editor
June 14th, 2010
by Ben Nilson of Logan
The 10th Amendment to the United States Constitution reads: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." The Federalist Papers are a collection of letters written to selected newspapers of New York addressing the citizens of the state of New York during the time that state was debating ratification of the Constitution. In these letters, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay urged the citizens of New York to ratify the document, making certain clarifications and addressing, among other issues, concerns many at the time had that the document created too strong of a federal government and left too few powers to the states as sovereign entities.
James Madison, in Federalist Paper No. 45, wrote: "The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects ... The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State."
Today we have a federal government that has utterly and indisputably turned its back on the 10th Amendment and the original intent of the authors of the Constitution, violated its place, and has become a hulking behemoth stretching far beyond its constitutional bounds, contributing to myriad problems. We have a populace that has been taught to believe that whatever Congress passes with a majority vote and is signed by the president is the law, constitutional limits on power notwithstanding.
The founding fathers put many checks and balances in the Constitution to prevent too much power from accumulating in one place. One of these checks is the division of powers between state and federal governments. But with the federal government totally disregarding this check on its power, who is left to uphold it? The states themselves.
It is up to the states and state legislatures to tell the federal government when enough is enough and stand firm on constitutional principles in the face of Washington, D.C.'s, relentless power grab. For this reason we need strong, principled leaders with a firm understanding of the Constitution and the proper role of government in Utah's state Legislature. It is our responsibility as voters to elect such public servants. Chuck Bateman, who's running for the Utah House of Representatives, is one of these. Check out his S.M.A.R.T. platform at chuckbateman.com, and please join me in voting for him June 22 at the Republican Party primary.

Vote Bateman for Freedom
The Herald Journal, Letters to the Editor
May 26th, 2010
by Boyd Hubbard of Nibley
It seems that many of us today will vote for representatives who are the most popular or who are willing to make just another &qout;law" that will trade away our freedoms for a tiny bit of imaginary security. As we do this, slowly our free economy, Constitution and individual rights are destroyed.
Whatever happened to individual responsibility and self-reliance? You are the one that knows what is best for your family. Big government is becoming more involved in our lives every day, and we sit back and let it happen.
I believe we should elect lawmakers at all levels that will protect our Constitution and vote 100 percent for limited government.
Locally, I know Chuck Bateman is the best choice to defend our traditional family values and allow the individual the power to direct their own failure or success. He supports states rights, the 2nd Amendment, low taxes and state and local control over education.
Chuck Bateman deserves our vote in the primary election June 22. Please help protect our liberty and get out and vote.

Bateman will guard freedom
The Herald Journal, Letters to the Editor
May 16th, 2010
by Bauni Nilson of Providence
I am writing to voice my support for Chuck Bateman who is running for the Utah House of Representatives in District 5.
As we all have seen recently, the federal government wishes to be in charge of every facet of our lives, and unless we work on the state level to keep our freedom, it will be systematically taken away from us. We need state representatives who will stand with us in our struggle to retain our freedom and who will actively vote for legislation that will protect Utahns from unconstitutional decisions made by the federal government.
Chuck Bateman is the man for the job! He has developed a deep understanding of the Constitution and is committed to defending and upholding it. He will always study all the facets of an issue and will stand firm in voting for that which is fair, just, and right. Chuck Bateman will not look for the least controversial stance on an issue, or follow the crowd to the most popular outcome; he will stand firm in his strong moral character and do what needs to be done to keep the government within the boundaries placed on it by the Constitution.
Chuck Bateman knows what it important to the people of Cache Valley; he values our opinions and understands our principles. Chuck Bateman is a great choice for the House of Representatives. Please get to know Chuck yourselves through chuckbateman.com and join me in giving this great man our support.

Liberty Republican Caucus endorses Chuck Bateman
The Liberty Republican Forum
May 19th, 2010
by Julian Babbitt
Chuck Bateman for State Representative, District 5
All of the endorsed candidates share common goals of dramatically reducing spending, cutting taxes and an overall sense that government needs to return to its proper role and and exercise only those powers enumerated in the Constitution. With the Obama Administration’s trampling of states’ rights and personal freedom, the time is now for change at both the federal and state level.

Over the last two months, I have heard Chuck Bateman speak at least six times. I am convinced that, because of his 20-plus years spent working for large financial firms, his understanding of the financial sector would be greater and more encompassing than any one state legislator and perhaps all of them put together. We are going to need him as a state legislator to help guide the state to financial stability in the event our nation’s financial condition worsens - which is highly likely. He has a plan for doing that. Chuck is for smaller, limited government. He understands that the problem that we have in this nation is a result of us allowing our government to inflict upon us progressive, socialistic and Marxist programs.
The problems we have are not a result of honest capitalism. They would not exist in a pure capitalistic system, which we haven’t had for more than 100 years. We have had a hybrid form that lately has been more like socialism than capitalism. After hearing Chuck speak, I can say that the man really does know the Constitution. It is not something that is being said about him just to get votes. The legislation that he will support and create will be based on the literal interpretation of the Constitution - unlike his opponent who has voted only 49 percent of the time in favor of limited government.
One reason that this nation is in the condition that it is in is because we as a nation are ignorant about our foundational documents. Chuck has a solution for that. He has a solution for making our courts accountable for their rulings. He is against entitlement programs and redistribution of wealth. It is time we elect legislators who will stop participating in these types of programs. There are basically five parties that make up the Utah Legislature, conservative Republican, moderate Republican, liberal Republican, moderate Democrat and liberal Democrat. Conservative Republicans make up the smallest percentage. How much better could our state be if we had more constitutionally minded conservatives in office? Chuck has a degree in education, grew up on a ranch and ran that ranch for 10 years of his adult life. Along with his understanding of the Constitution and his commitment to it and with his financial background makes him the best candidate for House District 5 for the state of Utah. He is a man of integrity and would serve us well.

Curt Webb, Chuck Bateman interviews and links
Utah Delegate
April 27th, 2010
As a delegate, my goal was to get more information about each candidate so that I could make a more informed choice. I met and briefly interviewed each candidate. I also interviewed each candidate by phone to ask additional questions and record the calls (link below). I'm impressed with how each candidate focused on their own campaign and benefits and "kept it clean" and free of attacks.

I am writing to voice my support and endorsement for Chuck Bateman who is running for the Utah House of Representatives in District 5.
I think most people on all sides of the political spectrum can agree on one thing - that our country faces some serious problems and unless we change the way we are doing things we are going to face a lot more problems. With a depressed economy, lower tax revenues, increased government spending and favoring of money and power-driven special interest groups by both major parties, now more than ever we need to create a safe haven in our home states that can protect us from a federal government that has made bad decisions (regardless of which party was in power).
Our state legislators are a key element to making Utah a safe-haven from federal corruption. We need representatives who will take a stand and deal with the hard issues, ones who will help Utah work toward self-sufficiency. We need someone who will do more than just vote for the least controversial stance, but who will actively write, promote, and vote for legislation that will protect Utah from damaging decisions made by the federal government.
Chuck Bateman is just such a person. He has a background in a variety of things that give him balanced understanding of things that are important to the people of this valley. His life career has included farming, education, business and financial education that give him a unique ability to understand problems from multiple viewpoints. He has also developed a deep understanding of the Constitution and has made a commitment to uphold and defend it.
In addition to his extensive knowledge, and perhaps more important, is his integrity and his strong moral character. As I have gotten to know Chuck I have been very impressed by the firmness of his principles. He listens to people and considers what they say, but he always studies it out to make sure it is right. He is not one to be swayed by bribery, flattery or what happens to be popular at the time. He will always vote for that which is right, fair and just.
Please join with me in supporting Chuck Bateman as a delegate at the Republican caucus meetings March 23 at 7 p.m. If you would like to meet Chuck in person please visit his blog and click the calendar link to see when he will be in your neighborhood. If he is not scheduled in your area please consider hosting him in your home.

LDS First Presidency Letter on Utah Precinct Caucus Meetings
Newsroom Blog
Public Affairs Department, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
March 10th, 2010
By Lyman Kirkland
The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a letter early in March to be read in all Utah congregations, which encouraged Latter-day Saints to attend their local precinct caucus meetings:
On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, political parties in Utah will hold precinct caucus meetings. Precinct caucuses are the most fundamental grassroots level of political involvement. They are best served by a broad representation of Utah citizens. Those who attend play a critical role in selecting candidates.
We ask that local leaders not schedule meetings on that Tuesday evening so that members may attend a caucus meeting. The location of these meetings can be found on the Web sites of the respective political parties.
Principles compatible with the gospel may be found in the platforms of various political parties. We encourage members to attend their precinct caucus meetings.
The First Presidency has given this same admonition in the past and encouraged members of the Church to participate, with other good citizens, in the political process as part of their individual civic duty, while the Church itself remains politically neutral.
The Church's political neutrality statement (found here on Newsroom.lds.org) explains the principles the Church follows with regard to the political process.
Bateman challenging Webb and the federal government
Cache Valley Daily
March 4th, 2010
By Jennie Christensen
Running for Utah legislature in District 5 is the first venture into politics for Chuck Bateman, a 10-year resident of Providence and a candidate with credentials for his work in agricultural education and financial industries. On KVNU's Crosstalk show Wednesday, Bateman said he will be challenging fellow Republican incumbent Curt Webb for the seat.
"The way things are going today, with the federal government's encroachment upon states' sovereignty, the freedom and liberties of our people and the taking of our land, I felt that maybe... I could best serve at the state level which I had been asked," Bateman said. "So it was a nice fit and as long as people would support me I would throw my hat in the ring and do what I could do."
Bateman says he was encouraged to run by some key people involved with the local Independence Caucus. He believes the federal government is blatantly encroaching upon the freedoms and liberties of the people. He also believes the federal government is overstepping its bounds on the sovereignty of the state, especially with the confiscation of lands. He sees eminent domain as a huge issue.
"That is going to be one of the things that we're going to get locked into a battle with the federal government because of what they are doing via executive orders from the executive branch, in essence the President," Bateman explains. "So we'll see what happens".
"But we've got to stand up for this. The tremendous amount of minerals and so forth that are on these lands are vitally important for Utah to go forward and fund its educational system."
If elected, Bateman says he will stand up for states' rights as provided for in the Constitution. Both Bateman and Webb are residents of Providence.

Bateman declares candidacy for District 5 seat in Utah House
Excerps from USU Statesman
Hard News Cafe
March 1st, 2010
By Bonnie Phelps
PROVIDENCE – Providence resident Chuck Bateman announced his decision to run for Utah House of Representatives, District Five on Friday night. He made this announcement to an audience of about 35 people at the Cobblestone Commercial Building in Providence.
Bateman will run against Curt Webb for the Republican backing on April 30 at Mt. Logan Middle School where the delegates vote. The delegates will be elected on March 23 at neighborhood caucus meetings. If Bateman or Webb gets 60 percent or more of the votes, they will receive the Republican backing, and the one who got 40 percent or less will be eliminated. If neither gets 60 percent, there will be a primary election.
In Bateman’s address he promised to maintain his integrity. "I will commit to you that I will stand solid on correct principles, and I will not allow them [the people he would work with] to deviate me," Bateman said. He reiterated this point several times. He implied that his overall goal is to maintain and improve the freedom and liberty of the citizens of Utah, and ultimately the United States.
When telling why he decided to run, Bateman said, "I’m not here because this was my idea. I was approached in many different directions and asked if I would run."
"The biggest problem that we have as a state is the encroachment of the federal government," Bateman said. Bateman reminded the public that they have a constitutional right to resist this encroachment.
Bateman said that one of the biggest problems in our federal government is that the White House and Congress are assuming too much power, and by doing this they reduce the rights of the people.
When Patti Bateman introduced her husband to the crowd, she said that he would be a friend to education. Bateman was a high school teacher for five years in Malta, Mont., so education holds a special interest for him. Bateman mentioned that he would work to ensure students are educated more thoroughly in early American history, especially the Constitution.
James: elected officials need to be "responsive to citizens"
Excerps from Cache Valley Daily
February 26th, 2010
By Jennie Christensen
Providence resident Chuck Bateman is formally announcing his candidacy to challenge fellow Republican District 5 Representative Curt Webb in the upcoming election.
Independence Caucus representative Michelle King says she and other caucus members approached Bateman and asked him to run, but clarifies that the Independence Caucus as a group has not formally endorsed Bateman.
Bateman will be running as a Republican and party chairman David James says the Independence Caucus, the Tea Party Coalition and other groups are not formally part of the Republican Party but are active citizens who want to be involved.
"And it's great to have our elected officials responsive to the citizens because if we aren't involved, if we aren't talking to our elected officials they kind of wander off," James says.
Excerps from the 10th Amendment Center's endorsement of Chuck Bateman
February 20th, 2010
By Gary Wood
Chuck Bateman is a friend of the 10th Amendment and our U.S. Constitution. He is stepping into the political fray as a candidate in Utah House District 5. Hearing him announce his candidacy last month in Logan moved me deeply. Knowing the sacrifices he and his wife and family are willingly making in time and effort is motivational. Now, there is a way to keep up to date with his campaign as well as a way to easily introduce people to him. If you are in the Cache Valley give him a hand. If you know someone in the Cache Valley give them his web address.
